Bushara Bustan wins top prize at 2023 Zongo Startup Summit pitching

As she books an automatic place in the grand finale of the $10,000 prize, MacDan Entrepreneurship Challenge

Bushara Bustan emerged as the top winner in a pitching competition at the Zongo Startup Summit 2023 held on Saturday, December 23, booking an automatic place in the Grand Finale of next year’s $10,000 prized MacDan Entrepreneurship Challenge.

Founder Abass Bushira pitched her business idea to a panel of judges to beat out 14 other contestants to secure the title.

Bushara Bustan focuses on pineapple cultivation to meet the rising demand for fresh organic fruits, and it was an excellent presentation by the founder who did the magic.

After being announced as the winner at the event held at the National Mosque in Accra, a delighted Bushira expressed gratitude to the ZongoVation Hub for the opportunity.

“I am so excited and thankful for this chance to showcase Bushara Bustan,” she said.

“I am thrilled and grateful to have won this competition, and let me say a big thank you to the Zongovation Hub and the organisers of this summit for providing us with this platform to showcase our ideas and receive support.

“This opportunity will enable us to expand our operations, invest in new technologies, and create more jobs in our community.”

The startup aims to expand into different pineapple varieties and create value-added products like dried snacks and powder.

Abass Bushira attributed her success to diligent preparation, saying her tireless efforts to perfect the pitch have landed her a place in the prestigious ZongoVation Challenge accelerator programme.

“I believe that my hard work and dedication paid off, and I am grateful for this opportunity to showcase our business and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth,” remarked a proud Bushira.

“The hours spent in front of my mirror rehearsing  to perfectly polish my stage presence, body language, and delivery to ensure that I could deliver a captivating and confident pitch have all yielded positive results.”

Over 500 youth entrepreneurs participated in the summit organised by ZongoVation Hub. It provided training, mentoring, and resources to promote business growth in Zongo communities.

The pitch competition was a highlight of the event as the 15 competitors took the stage to market their brands in a packed conference hall at the National Mosque Complex.

Judges evaluated contestants on criteria like business viability, innovation, and presentation ability before awarding Bushira the top prize.

With a spot now confirmed in the finals of the prestigious MacDan Entrepreneurship Challenge, Bushira can set her sights even higher.

The Zongo Startup Programme is in partnership with the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), supported by Ghana’s Ministry of Finance and the World Bank.

Officials say the initiative has already helped launch over 50 startups, with more youth set to benefit from upcoming summits and capacity building.
