As thousands gather in Accra for celebration of Prophet Muhammad's birth

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, hosted the 2024 National Maulid celebration in Accra on Saturday night, drawing a massive crowd of Muslims from across Ghana and beyond.

The annual event, which marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad, saw an impressive turnout of dignitaries, including government officials, politicians, and notable figures from the sub-region.

The Maulid celebration, held at a grand venue in the capital, was graced by the presence of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the Special Guest of Honour.

Other attendees included ministers of state, members of parliament, and representatives from various political parties, underscoring the event’s significance in Ghana’s cultural and political calendar.

In his welcome address, the National Chief Imam emphasised the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence:

“This gathering is a testament to the unifying power of our faith and our shared values as Ghanaians. As we celebrate the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, let us remember his message of peace, compassion, and tolerance,” Sheikh Sharubutu said.

Vice President Bawumia, in his keynote speech, echoed the Chief Imam’s sentiments and called for national harmony, particularly in light of the upcoming December elections:

“Our diversity is our strength, and events like the National Maulid remind us of the bonds that unite us as a nation. As we approach the elections, let us pledge to maintain the peace and stability that Ghana is known for,” Dr Bawumia urged.

The event featured recitations from the Holy Quran, traditional Islamic songs, and scholarly discourses on the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad. Dignitaries from neighbouring countries also shared messages of goodwill, highlighting the regional importance of the celebration.

As the night progressed, speakers consistently emphasised the need for peace and national cohesion. A prominent Islamic scholar from the sub-region remarked:

“The Prophet’s life teaches us to embrace differences and seek common ground. This lesson is crucial for Ghana and indeed all of West Africa as we face the challenges of our time.”

The 2024 National Maulid celebration not only served as a spiritual gathering for Muslims but also as a platform for promoting interfaith dialogue and national unity.

As the event concluded, attendees left with renewed calls for peace and a shared commitment to upholding Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of stability in the region.
