Kudus bags brace in AFCON debut as Ghana Draw 2-2 with Egypt

Star boy Mohammed Kudus announced his return from injury in spectacular fashion, scoring a brace on his AFCON 2023 debut to earn Man of the Match honours in Ghana’s 2-2 draw with Egypt on Thursday.

After missing the opening game loss to Cape Verde, Kudus was restored to the Black Stars starting XI for the crucial Group B clash with the Pharaos at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

The Tottenham attacker made an immediate impact, breaking the deadlock on the stroke of halftime with a thunderous long-range drive into the left corner.

Kudus broke the deadlock just before halftime, firing Ghana ahead with a thunderous long-range strike.

But Egypt equalised through Omar Marmoush in the 69th minute after an error-back pass from  Inaki Williams.

But Kudus responded immediately to restore Ghana’s lead, his deflected shot looping over the keeper.

However, Ghana’s poor defending allowed Mostafa Mohamed to tap in another equalizer for Egypt in the 72nd minute.

Despite twice letting their lead slip after his goals, the Nima-born star walked away with the man of the match award after a dominant attacking display.

His two goals define his debut in AFCON history after missing out on the 2021 edition due to injury.

Kudus will now be key to Ghana’s chances of progressing from the group, as they seek at least a point in their final match against Mozambique.

After announcing himself in style, the 22-year-old will be hoping to maintain his scoring form and lead Ghana into the knockout phase.
